Book Review

Handbook and Catalogue

By Berlslav Sekelj

I highly recommend a new book on Bosnian Philately written by our distinguished member Berislav Sekelj. Ben, as he is known to his friends is a keen student of Bosnian Philately. He has specialized in Bosnia for many years and has assembled an outstanding collection of Bosnian material with special emphasis on postal history. I first met Ben on eBbay. He has a great many really nice duplicates that he offers for sale from time to time at very reasonable reserves. Ben is a long standing member of the AUSPS and a contributor to our Bulletins.

Ben's new book is entitled Handbook and Catalogue "POSTAL HISTORY BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA 1878 - 1918" and Handbuch und Katalog" POSTGESCHICHTE BOSNIEN UND HERZEGOWINA 1878 - 1918". All essential parts of the text have been translated into English and German. That is extremely important to those of us, like myself, who have difficulty with foreign languages.

As noted in Ben's press release, this handbook deals with the postmarks, manuscript cancellations, perfins, labels, postal stationery, revenue stamps and the 1914 First War Charity Issue set of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Austria-Hungarian rule (1878 - 1918). It concentrates primarily on those areas of interest to collectors which have hitherto been neglected or ignored by standard catalogues. It is the author's intention to inform and popularize these aspects of Bosnian postal history. A number of maps are included showing various locations, postal routes and railway networks within the province. Descriptions of towns and villages are supported by the use of illustrations of contemporary picture postcards.
